The year begins with Jupiter as the sky’s brightest “star”, high in the southeast at nightfall, while Saturn hovers in the lower half of the southwestern sky.  Saturn’s glorious rings – now almost edgewise to our view – can be seen with any telescope with more than 30x magnification; observe the Ringed Planet early, as it is too low to be seen after 7:00 p.m.  Earth stands closest to the sun (at perihelion) on the 2nd at 8:00 p.m.  The Moon floats above Saturn on the 13th and below it on the 14th, before forming a close conjunction with Jupiter on the 18th.  In the predawn sky, Venus, in Scorpious, is best seen in the east from 6:00to 6:30 a.m., with Mercury to its lower left until the 27th.  Both are extremely low, as is Mars when it joins Mercury on the morning of the 27th.
